Performance Optimization Using Slotless Motors and PWM Drives

Smooth motion, meaning very low position and current loop error while at speed, is critical to system performance in many precision motion applications, including surgical and industrial robotics, optical scanning and inspection and semiconductor equipment. Slotless motors provide smooth motion due to their inherent zero cogging design. These motors, however, have very low inductance due to their lack of iron in the magnetic field. Low inductance can create unwanted side-effects such as coil heating from PWM current ripple. This paper discusses how to configure a low inductance motor system to reduce current ripple and minimize position error while under motion. Configurations include PWM rate adjustment, adding inductors to each motor phase, and tuning the current loops. Some background regarding motors and driving inductive loads with a PWM drive will be discussed to set the stage for a thorough discussion of how to optimize a slotless motor system.

Replacing Optical Encoders with Magnetic Encoders - the Journey to High Accuracy

The times when magnetic measuring technology could be brushed off as too inaccurate for industrial measurements are finally over. In recent years great progress has been made in system accuracy of magnetic measurement solutions. Today magnetic systems can compete with many optical systems which are used in motion control applications. In his lecture Dr. Torsten Becker -- managing director of the German magnet specialist BOGEN Electronic -- starts with the presentation of the system accuracies of optical and magnetic measuring systems and compares them with each other. Interfaces are shown and it is discussed which system accuracies are actually needed in industrial applications for motion control. Afterwards the factors which influence the accuracy of magnetic measuring systems are pointed out. First of all the focus will be on the basics of magnet technology and the terms trueness, resolution and accuracy -- which are often used synonymously -- are defined scientifically. Thereafter various magnetic patterns and pole pitches are introduced and their optimal use in the field of motion control is explained.

Motion Planning for Robotic Bin Picking

A key component of effective bin picking is motion planning. Many systems overlook the motion planning aspect, thinking that a system that can perfectly identify a part type and 3D location within a bin, can be successful. Motion planning for bin picking will be described, including new methods of automated path planning that enable wide scale bin picking. New technologies, such as natural tasking -- a unique approach to picking that optimizes the constraint space (how a part can be picked) given the end effector and the part being picked, will be discussed. The difference between global planning and local planning, and how both should be used for effective bin picking will also be discussed.

Real world bin picking examples showing this type of motion planning will be shown and described.

Advanced control and perception, if employed properly, not only improves performance but also simplifies the interface to programming a bin picking solution. In fact, it is only by providing this layer of intelligence in the controller that clean, intuitive, easy to use UIs can be created. Simple programming interfaces are what’s lacking in many earlier bin picking solutions, and are a necessity for Cobot solutions, where customers are often low lot-size, short-run manufacturers. The number of knobs that need to be tuned must be minimized. Advanced perception and path planning are tools that reduce the number of knobs to tune, thus opening up bin picking to a new class of user.

Learn to take advantage of the emerging class of smart grippers that are able to perform a large variety of bin picking, kitting and assembly tasks using the same end-effector, thereby allowing users to use the same robot for multiple tasks. Here, mobility can dramatically extend the reach of a single manipulator. In particular, we demonstrate the abilities of the latest Intel Realsense perception devices, that make picking items as small as M3 screws feasible, and show how perception can be used in autonomous assembly tasks ranging from typical peg-in-hole problems to mounting flexible rubber bands onto pulleys using off-the-shelf force-torque sensors.

An Apple a Second: Bin Picking for SMEs

While manufacturers, retailers and distributors have increased efficiency in sourcing, production and logistics through advanced automation, the same is not true for fulfillment. The critical step of prepping a customer's order represents a final frontier in exploiting the opportunities found in increasing automation.

Robotic innovation and advances in end-of-arm-tools (EOATs) that can perform tasks with human hand-like dexterity are making it possible to bring automation to the fulfillment stage of the supply chain -- specifically bin picking.

New technologies such as soft robotics can grasp and pick items of varying weight and size, including those that are delicate or fragile. Industries that haven't been able to automate such functions as pick and place and packaging are now able to because of advances in grippers that can autonomously retrieve, sort and fulfill orders at the rate of 600 picks per hour in some instances.

Training Data for Robotics & AI

Computer vision teams around the world working on autonomous vehicle perception have collected terabytes of raw sensor data that must be organized and labeled to train their models. Finding ways to efficiently sort and label that data is critical for time and cost savings when generating training data sets.

Ground-truth is critical for developing and validating autonomous systems. The accuracy of the annotations in these datasets and greatly affect the performance of CV and AI models utilized by autonomous vehicles. My presentation would address the source of these errors and how to mitigate them.

While crowdsourcing can allow teams to quickly build a large training data set, it can greatly affect the overall quality of the dataset. I will share best practices and learnings from utilizing crowd-sourcing to help autonomous vehicle developers annotate millions of images.
